What Are The Advantage And Disadvantage Of A Li-ion Battery?

The Li-ion battery has the following advantages:

N1) the operating voltage of the single cell is up to 3.6-3.8V.

N2) is larger than energy. At present, the actual specific energy of the battery can be 100-115W.h/kg and 240-253W.h/L (2 times Ni-Cd, 1.5 times Ni-MH). With the development of technology, the specific energy can be as high as 150W.h/kg and 400W.h/L.

N3) long cycle life. In general, more than 500 times, or even 1000 times.

N4) has good safety performance, no pollution and no memory effect. Lithium batteries, as Li-ion precursors, have short circuited due to the formation of dendrites in metal lithium, reducing their application areas; Li-ion contains no contaminated elements such as cadmium, lead, mercury and other elements; a major disadvantage of some processes (such as sintering type) Ni-Cd batteries is "memory effect", which severely restraints the use of batteries, but Li-ion does not exist. Problems in this area.

N5) self discharge small

The self discharge rate of Li-ion filled with electricity at room temperature for 1 months is about 10%, much lower than that of Ni-Cd 25-30%, Ni and MH 30-35%.

Li-ion also has some shortcomings

1) the cost of the battery is high. It is mainly manifested in the high price of LiCoO2 (less resources of Co) and the difficulty in purifying electrolyte system.

N 2) can not discharge large current. Because of the organic electrolyte system and other reasons, the battery internal resistance is larger than the other type of battery, so the discharge current density is smaller, the general discharge current is below 0.5C, which is only suitable for the use of small and medium electric current.

N 3) need to protect line control.

N A, overcharge protection: the battery overcharge will destroy the positive structure and affect the performance and life; at the same time, overcharge makes the electrolyte decompose, the internal pressure is too high to cause leakage and so on. Because the battery is charging during the charging process, the voltage will rise continuously, so it must be charged under the constant pressure of 4.1V-4.2V;

B, over discharge protection: over discharge will cause a large number of active substances to be irreversible and a large number of attenuation, so there is also need to protect line control.
